A Paper House

The tactile experience of paper—its texture and flexibility—has often been overlooked in recent years. I designed a unique folder for the Gilbert Papers Student Letterhead Competition to hold the winning student letterhead designs.

The construction of this folder is elegantly simple, using folds and die cuts to create a form that encapsulates a set of letterheads, envelopes, and business cards. There is no glue or staples involved; Enclosed on all four sides, ensuring that nothing falls out, the folder is self-locking with a die-cut slit.

In designing this folder, I attempted to capture the essence of written communication. Working in black and white, the images reference early writing systems, from cave drawings and Egyptian hieroglyphics to the advent of typography. The design incorporates texture, form, and measurement systems that converge on different quadrants of the folder. Unwrapping the content offers an intriguing challenge, inviting users to discover what lies inside.
