As Odgis + Co celebrates 35 years in business, we reflect on one of our most exciting design projects.
From 1963 to 1989 Champion Paper published The Imagination Series. These promotional brochures target designers, art directors, and printers. They showcase creative uses of paper on a diverse range of paper grades with various printing and finishing techniques. Each issue focuses on a theme which employs illustrations, photography, graphics, historical facts and anecdotes. There are 26 books in total. Their themes include San Francisco, U.S. Rivers, Brazil, Australia, Hong Kong, the Circus, Main Street, and Time and Trees to name a few.
Each issue of The Imagination Series was conceptualized and created by well-known designers including James Miho, S. Neil Fujita, Massimo Vignelli, Milton Glaser, George Tscherny, Henry Wolf and others.
Champion Paper’s Imagination 26 is an iconography based on the word “white,” examining its multiple meanings. This visual story utilizes the power of positive and negative space to create dynamic tension on the page. White on White, the last in the series, was designed by Janet Odgis, Creative Director of Odgis + Company. Janet was the only woman to have this honor. The publication was followed by a speaking tour focused on creative thinking and experimental production. These well-attended talks took place in major cities around the US including Symphony Hall in Chicago.
Although this is the final project of the Imagination series, it is not the end of imagination.
Our imagination lives on and manifests itself in different ways.
