The Real Value of Good Design

7/21/2021
If a picture is worth 1,000 words, how much more is good design worth? In today’s world, we have little time and patience to consume the information overload around us. We are bombarded by information and, for better or worse, make many decisions impulsively. Therefore, businesses must be incredibly clear and communicate their value in the blink of an eye. Sure, we all have deep complex stories and want to share them, but the way to our heart and mind is through our eyes.

Brand Design Facts:

1. 80% of our brain is dedicated to recognizing visual stimuli. Good design gives you a competitive edge, drives powerful marketing results, and allows you to stand out.
2. 94% of users will leave a website with poor design. Good design keeps your website easy to use.
3. Visual appeal can be assessed in about 50 milliseconds. Good design makes a good first impression.
4. 65% of people understand and grasp concepts far better when they are visualized.
5. A web user’s attention span is just 6.8 seconds. Design motivates people to act.
6. Infographics can increase web traffic by up to 12%. Good design keeps your information easy to understand. Infographics allow you to consolidate your concept and make it digestible.

Good Design Helps:

1. Generate consumer trust
2. Communicate your company values and strengthen your brand
3. Give you a competitive edge
4. Drive powerful marketing results
5. Allow you to differentiate yourself
6. Make your brand memorable

Working in the industry for over 35 years, Odgis + Co had the pleasure of working with a wide range of clients. We have established clear patterns of effective design resulting in strong brand awareness, business growth, and, most importantly, revenue increases.

Clarifying Business with Design: Branding for REIT

Historically, our REIT client was never noticed for all the good work they did in sustainability. In 2013, Odgis + Co began working with them to simplify their story. Our first publication resulted in winning a $450 million Green Bond, which led them to become a leader in the space. Since then, we have been continuously working with them to progress their efforts. This year, their ESG report was featured in Harvard Law School’s Forum. The interesting thing about their growing success is that they were not doing anything differently than they did before. We simply narrated the story with the design and messaging that was easy for people to understand and relate to.

Creating this narrative was a team effort. It was an iterative process in which we collected and identified the key points and clarified the information with infographics to tell their story. This was not a turnkey project. As a small agency, we invested time and energy to build this story, which has now become a series of annuals. From the client’s perspective, this project was a major differentiator.

Unlocking Value with Design: Stock Value Increase for Our REIT Client

For 12 years we have been the creative agency for a Real Estate REIT – working on designing everything from their fund launches to Annual Reports to their website. Since we started working with them in 2008, their stock value has increased 4-fold. Part of that success was the way they told their story, making their advantages over the competition clearer than ever. In other words, the design gave them an identity that people could remember and relate to.

Design Drives Growth: Rebranding Doubles the Size of the Business

A political/financial consulting firm we have worked with started in 1998 as a one-man consultancy. After many years in the business, they had outgrown their logo, tagline, and website. We worked with them on a brand strategy and developed their tagline to clearly define what they do. We redesigned their logo, all their publications and created a new, user-friendly website with an intuitive content management system that allows for constant updating. Since the rebranding, they have grown more than twice their size.

Good Design Matters: Groundbreaking and Accessible

This is what our client said about the project we worked on for a lobbying organization that focuses on nuclear innovation and climate change:

“Thanks to everyone for all your amazing work on this important document. It may seem very technical, but its content is groundbreaking, and it is by far the most accessible, well-designed document ever produced on this subject.”

What we see is so much more powerful than what we read. Design has the power to influence behavior. Numbers don’t lie – design sells. Seeing evokes an emotional response and builds trust. Design consistency is key to building customer relationships. Additionally, consistent design is crucial to social media success. Design is more than just how it looks.
Good design = Good value.
